I am a native English speaker, graduate, and UK citizen with a CELTA qualification and an MA degree in TESOL in which I achieved a Merit award. I am a highly motivated and dedicated individual with a strong desire to develop and inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities, and to meet their differing academic or pastoral needs, thus allowing them to achieve their individual goals.
I believe I have excellent communication and interpersonal skills combined with an approachable nature and I feel this gives me the ability to work effectively with students and staff members from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds alike. I also possess the ability to work independently and to work flexibly and collaboratively within a team when required. Further, excellent time management and organisational skills allow me to produce work of a high quality while meeting deadlines.
With over 10 years of teaching experience including foreign language high school and university contexts, I believe I have acquired a range of skills and competences which enable me to be an effective teacher. The MA TESOL facilitated the development of my own teaching approach as it provided a great insight into the process of learning and knowledge of teaching methodologies and approaches along with techniques which can be applied in the classroom. This enables me to reflect on and examine my own teaching practices which is essential to adapting them accordingly in order to deliver the most effective lessons, meeting the needs of students within specific syllabus constraints while accommodating individual student needs. While creating a conducive learning environment requires a solid knowledge base in terms of methodology and approach, I feel that my ability to build rapport with the student group is of paramount importance to effective language teaching. As language learning necessarily involves risk taking and as such, an associated anxiety, the ability to build rapport with students and to develop a positive learning environment is invaluable.
My teaching philosophy is based on communicative methodology and a belief that it is possible to ensure that students learn the mechanics of the language and improve their communicative competence while also providing the opportunities and means for the development of creativity, critical thinking and lifelong learning skills. It is the role of the teacher to provide students with the tools to become autonomous learners but also to create a student-centred classroom environment. As such, I believe in a focus on meaningful communication in authentic contexts, that is, opportunities to process meaningful input and produce meaningful output, social interaction and collaboration. Active learning strongly influences learning outcomes; therefore, learners should be active participants in the classroom. By doing so and through collaborative work and interaction, the learner’s potential level of development can be vastly increased. Further, timely feedback and feed-forward encourages and enables students to develop and to become independent learners.
