English Language Learner (ELL) Specialist

Hunter College seeks an English Language Learner (ELL) Specialist (50% time) to work on the Hunter College AANAPISI Project (HCAP), a five-year grant-funded program which aims to mitigate Asian Pacific Islander (API) students’ barriers to educational achievement. Through a $1.7M grant awarded by the Department of Education to Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), HCAP addresses two key goals: 1) develop and improve academic programs for high-need API students (e.g. first-generation college-goers, immigrant students and/or English language learners) and, 2) enhance student services and counseling for high-need API students.

The HCAP ELL Specialist will primarily work on developing and teaching new, integrated Asian American Studies Program (AASP) and ESL courses. The ELL Specialist will also collaborate with other Hunter departments and student services programs to enhance the linguistic and cultural support available to API and ESL students at Hunter College. Outcomes of all HCAP programs, including the work of ELL Specialist, will include measurable increases in the GPAs, persistence, and graduation rates of API and HCAP students at Hunter College as well as their increased use of the college’s advising and mental health services.

Reporting to the HCAP Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-PIs, the ELL Specialist will work on the following tasks over the five years of the HCAP project:

Create and teach new AASP and ESL courses, including developing online sections;
Conduct needs analysis surveys of ELL and API student needs with students, instructors, and administrators across Hunter College;
Develop workshops and training programs for Hunter college campus units about the needs and backgrounds of ELL and API students based on needs analysis surveys and current research on ELL students;
Design and maintain online writing, language, and grammar exercises for ELL students;
Assist in the generation of annual reports for the Department of Education, which both narrate HCAP programs as well as provide a rigorous reporting of HCAP outcomes;
Perform other duties as assigned by HCAP PI and Co-PIs.

Qualifications include:

PH.D. or MA in TESOL, Education, Asian American Studies, or related field;
2-3 years of experience teaching API-background students and ELLs at the university level;
Demonstrated interest in developing ELL courses through Asian American Studies content;
Ability to develop and teach online courses and incorporate digital content into classroom projects;
Passionate about working with diverse students and high-need API students;
Qualitative research experience preferred.
