Job Overview

The Assistant Academic Director (AAD) manages a team of instructors and oversees the delivery of academic programs to a diverse group of international students in an Intensive English Program (IEP) and an International Accelerator Program (IAP). Reporting to the Associate Academic Director with dotted-line responsibility to the Academic Chair and working with the national academic affairs team, the AAD will provide professional support and development, including observations and performance reviews, hiring new staff, ensuring the timely and effective delivery of all products and services, and communicating regularly with academic team members about developments within the IEP and IAP.

The IAP includes two or three semesters of advanced English-language and study skills, acculturation, and general education courses prior to the start of a university degree program. IAP students polish their academic English-language and study skills and earn university credits before going directly into a bachelor's degree program or into a master's program. The IEP includes five.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the teams of IEP and IAP instructorsStay current with the latest developments and best practices in ESL/EFL pedagogy, curriculum development, testing, and teaching
Advise on the selection and/or preparation of supplemental teaching materials (including textbooks, websites, multimedia resources and self-created materials) for international students at specified CEFR levels (A2 to B2+)
Stay current on all local, state, and federal regulations, including visa requirements, pertaining to the legal instruction of international students in the United States
Maintain up-to-date records of student grades and attendance on the IEP and IAP databases in accordance with I-20 visa requirements and all other relevant regulations
Work closely with the University Registrar to devise class schedules for students across programs
Oversee the academic support services for students across programs and advise students, as needed
Conduct regular observations of instructors in the classroom, keeping accurate and complete records and communicating the results, as directed
Conduct annual performance reviews of instructors, as directed
Ensure that instructors foster a communicative, student-centered classroom environment, in which student interaction is encouraged and facilitated
Ensure that instructors produce and follow lesson plans that reflect effective teaching strategies and meet the individual needs of students
Collect and organize records of all formative and summative student evaluations, and produce reports summarizing student results, as directed
Ensure that all students receive a certificate indicating the level they have achieved prior to completing their studies in the IEP
Provide opportunities for staff development and professional training, and participate in same when appropriate
Act as a positive ambassador for Adelphi International
Qualifications

Master's degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, higher education managements, or related field required
Demonstrable knowledge of applied linguistics, second language acquisition, language-teaching methodologies, assessment, and curriculum/lesson planning; TEFL certifications (CELTA, DELTA, Bridge, or Oxford) preferred
Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), and the can-do statements at each CEFR level
Minimum of 3 years of experience managing ESL teachers
Minimum of 3 years of teaching general and academic English to L2 learners
Overseas experience or experience teaching in multicultural/multilingual classrooms desired
Ability to work in a diverse environment and exhibit cross-cultural competence and understanding
Proven customer service skills and demonstrated work ethic
High energy level and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
Demonstrated problem-solving, decision-making, and creative-thinking abilities
Demonstrated tact, patience, and diplomacy, particularly with non-native English speakers
Evidence of having a hands-on approach to academic delivery, student service, and business growth
Demonstrated understanding of class management tools, including databases, Microsoft Office programs, course management systems, and forms of media to support an interactive and student-centered classroom instruction
Exceptional interpersonal, communication, presentation, and leadership skills
Competence in a foreign language preferred
Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship
