Abbotsleigh seeks a highly skilled and experienced English Teacher to join our large, dynamic and collegial
English Department from January 2016. The successful candidate will be well-qualified, engaging and
highly motivated to ensure continued academic achievement and inspirational engagement with our Years
7 to 12 girls. Proven success in teaching Years 11 and 12 Extension 1 and 2 English, robust knowledge of
the syllabus, a deep passion for literature, strong intellectual acumen, solid IT competencies and a
collaborative manner are essential requirements for this role. As Tutor roles may also be involved, an
authentic commitment to pastoral care of girls within the Christian ethos of the School is essential.

Job Description – Senior School Teacher
Reports to the Headmistress, delegated as immediate supervision to the Head of Department.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Knowledge of subject matter and how to teach:
 Demonstrate knowledge, competence and confidence in the relevant subject discipline
 Demonstrate knowledge of pedagogy associated with subject discipline and year level
 Demonstrate knowledge of BOSTES or other relevant curriculum requirements
 Demonstrate knowledge of information and communication technologies (ICT) appropriate to subject
or year levels
Knowledge of students and how they learn:
 Prepare and implement lessons that use a range of teaching strategies and styles appropriate to
students’ levels, abilities and interests
 Differentiate learning tasks to provide for individual learning needs
 Integrate effective ICT skills and competencies into the teaching and learning process
Planning, assessing and reporting for effective learning:
 Use a variety of assessment and reporting strategies that complement and support the learning
process
 Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of student progress and achievement
 Provide feedback to students and parents on performance in a way that builds confidence and
encourages continued effort
 Provide meaningful reports, both written and oral, on student performance
Communication with students:
 Establish and communicate clear, challenging and achievable expectations for students
 Use effective questioning and discussion techniques to support student learning
 Develop good working relationships with students
 Give prompt and comprehensive attention to student work submitted for marking and feedback
Classroom management and learning environment:
 Use effective classroom management strategies that will encourage students to take responsibility for
their learning
 Practise academic care
Professional knowledge and practice:
 Demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching and learning
 Be organised for and punctual to commitments, including lessons, meetings, grounds duties and
excursions
 Provide duty of care
 Dress and behave in a professional manner
 Work collaboratively within department or year; undertake responsibilities within the department or
team, as required by HoD or Year Coordinator
 Contribute to the planning and implementation of department or year policies, and general school
policies
 Maintain standards of student care and discipline, both inside and outside the classroom
 Work in partnership with students, families and colleagues to improve learning outcomes for students
 Communicate with parents or guardians, students and colleagues in a professional and constructive
way
 Act and speak in a supportive and respectful manner of, and with, all colleagues
 Respond to emerging educational priorities and needs
 Keep abreast of current research and educational trends pertinent to the discipline
 Demonstrate commitment to teacher professional development
 Engage in critical self reflection of professional practices to improve the quality of teaching and learning
 Demonstrate commitment to intellectual inquiry
Engagement with School, profession and wider communities:

 Undertake any other duties as directed from time to time.
 Specific requirements:
 An appropriate university degree in subject matter and Teacher qualifications
 Familiarity with BOSTES syllabus
 Proven competency at integrating ICT into teaching
 Flexible use and integration of contemporary issues into teaching of courses when relevant
 Knowledge of teaching and learning styles and study skills
 Respect and appreciation of young people and their learning needs
 The ability to work collaboratively with staff and parents.
