English Teacher in Austria

NATURE OF THE WORK:
The volunteer will teach English to German-speaking students from the ages of 8 to 15 for a not-for-profit organization headquartered in the Austrian Lake District in Austria, the region made famous by the “Sound of Music” movie. Bilingual education has become increasingly popular in Austrian secondary schools and ABCi has recently launched a major effort to expand their outreach program. ABCi has a special focus on bringing free English lessons to rural and often otherwise overlooked children in the alpine region. Teaching takes place in different schools during in-school project weeks and via an online VLE, necessitating travel in and around Austria. In addition, the successful applicant will be given experience in the administration of a NGO in the education sector by taking part in project work and program development at Headquarters. The volunteer is provided with training in English project work, feedback from a senior teacher, full room and board with internet access, travel costs, evenings, weekends and Austrian public holidays free. At the conclusion of the 12-week intensive ESL volunteer training program (including 24 hours of teacher training seminars and 48 hours of observed teaching), the successful applicant with be awarded a TEFL Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages. Start date January 6th, 2014.
ABCi is a medium-sized Austrian NPO bringing together Austrian children and English native-speaking volunteers to form a bilingual learning environment by means of linguistic immersion, cultural exchange and foreign sports that promotes the use of English in Austrian classrooms and will provide every child in Austria with an English project day including elements of language, culture and sport by the year 2020. ABCi also aims to provide in-service CLIL training for all interested teachers in Austria, fair wages for our teachers, and professional development for our volunteers. ABCi encourages students to become supporting members of the association while fostering ties with government, community and business leaders.
Bachelor’s degree in education (or related field) and/or teacher certification, native English speaker, proficiency in German, genuine talent for teaching and a driver’s license. Candidates with experience in a non-traditional teaching environment such as summer camps, youth groups or outdoor education will be preferred. Candidates selected for this position will be subjected to a background investigation.
