The Papua New Guinea University of Technology is located in the industrial city of Lae, the second largest city in Papua New Guinea with population of over 100,000. The city is accessible by air from any part of the world. The University is the only technological university in Papua New Guinea. It has the main campus and three affiliated colleges. The main campus has 14 academic departments including one in Open and Distance Learning (ODL). It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering, natural and applied sciences, built environment, language and business. DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has established undergraduate Diploma/Degree programs in Computer Science and post-graduate Diploma programs in both Computer Science and Mathematics. The department also offers service subjects in Mathematics, Statistics and Information Technology to students taking Engineering, Business Studies, Natural Resources and other Diploma/Degree programs across the University. Departmental staff are engaged in research in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics Education.
The department has several vacancies at various levels and in various areas. All position require qualified applicants with relevant higher degrees, applied research interests and teaching experience. (The desire or willingness to teach in multiple disciplines would be an advantage). Above all, the department is seeking applicants who will enjoy the challenge of contributing to the technological development of Papua New Guinea.
PROFESSOR (4 Positions)
The department has vacancies for four (4) academic professorial positions; in Computer Science and Mathematics. These positions will be responsible for conducting teaching, research, and publication within the respective streams. They will be directly responsible and involved with the post graduate programs offered by the department.
Applicants for the post of Professor must have considerable teaching and research experience. Academic and research calibre should be adequately demonstrated by publications and other forms of professional output. Applicants must have a PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or Computer Science and should be a specialist in one area. Applicants must also be familiar with other areas of the department's academic activities and contribute meaningfully. The appointee should be capable of providing dynamic leadership in academic functions of the department, including teaching, research, course development and staff training.
SENIOR LECTURER (4 Positions)
Applicants must have a PhD and a bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Computer Science and an acceptable evidence of research potential and commitment to teaching both at graduate and undergraduate levels. Candidates must have the ability to perform effectively as a teacher and proven commitment to research at international levels as demonstrated by publications in refereed international journals and conference proceedings. Applicants with experience in ODE and graduate program development will have an advantage.
Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years full time teaching and research experience at university level and 2 or more international publications (single author equivalent) in reputed journals. He/she must have expertise in at least one or more of the following areas: computer hardware and software, systems analysis, mathematical computation and computer modeling.
LECTURER I/II (2 Positions)
Applicants must have a Masters degree and a bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Computer Science from a recognized University with an acceptable evidence of research potential and a commitment to teaching both at graduate and undergraduate levels. Applicants must have the ability to be able to perform effectively as a team and a proven commitment to research at an international level, as demonstrated by publications in refereed international journals and conference proceedings.
Applicants must have at least 2 years of teaching and research experience in a similar environment with expertise in at least one or more of the following areas: computer hardware and software, systems analysis, mathematical computation and computer modeling. The position requires candidates who are interested in and have experience with or demonstrated ability in providing students hands-on mathematics and computer science education.
The appointees of the positions in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department will also have the ability to routinely apply for competitive grant funding in their areas of research and to develop links relevant local industries for collaborative research
SALARY : Professor - K142,932 - K157,862 per annum

Associate Professor - K121,657 - K133,756 per annum
Senior Lecturer - K105,981 - K115,768 per annum
Lecturer II - K 89,239 - K 97,419 per annum
(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)
Initial contract period is normally for three years but shorter periods can be negotiated. Other benefits include a gratuity of 30% in the first year, 35% in the second year and 40% in the third year, support for approved research, appointment and repatriation fares for yourself and family, settling-in allowances, six weeks paid leave per year, recreation leave fares for yourself, spouse and two authorised dependants after 18 months of service, education fares and assistance towards school fees for two authorised dependants, salary protection plan and medical benefit schemes are available. Staff members are also permitted to earn from consultancy up to 50% of earnings annually. Free fully furnished accommodation provided.
