Taiwan PrimerTaiwan is a HUGE English teaching opportunity for native speakers with university degrees. While North American English is preferred there are opportunities for Britons, Aussies, Kiwis, South Africans and others as well. Most teachers find work at "buxibans," private language schools that specialize in cram-style courses for school-aged children and business professionals.Taiwan is a lucrative employment market that is popular with new graduates looking to pay off student loans, see the world and have a good time. More professional positions can be had in corporate situations, the public school system and universities for teachers with more experience and/or additional credentials. Full-time jobs should pay between NT$50,000 and NT$60,000 per month. If your contract pays an hourly wage, make sure a minimum number of hours are stipulated. Airfare is seldom paid and accommodation is usually not provided. Teachers need to budget money for start-up costs. Networking with teachers already in Taiwan to get feedback on schools, contracts, cost of living and savings potential. Taiwan is a small island but teaching situations definitely vary. When it comes to Taiwan it's not about getting a job; it's about getting a good one! Get TESOL certified in Zhuhai then teach in Taipei! |
