Mexico Primer

Mexico is a burgeoning TEFL market, and with good reason. The country has embraced NAFTA and thus the need for English. That said, Mexico is far from desperate for teachers. As a vacation hot-spot there remains a ready supply of sun-seeking, Latin culture loving native-speakers anxious to meet Mexico's relatively new demand for EFL teachers. While North American English is preferred there are jobs for qualified native-speakers from other countries as well.

Generally speaking, university degrees and TESOL certificates are required credentials for employment. The job market can be competitive, particularly in the larger, more cosmopolitan cities and - of course! - near the beach. Salaries start at about 3500 Pesos per month and go up from there. Private teaching opportunities are fairly common and usually pay 70+ pesos per hour. The hiring season is year-round with most jobs going to teachers who are on the ground in Mexico and able to apply in person. Teachers applying from abroad may find they need the assistance of a placement agency.
