Germany Primer

As a European Union nation, Germany is a great teaching destination for British and Irish teachers whose EU passports make them employable without visas. Unlike many other EU teaching markets, however, Germany is also a good opportunity for North Americans. Business English is the name of the game in Germany and that can make Canadian and American English teachers attractive and worth the time, effort and cost of visa processing.

Full-time employment is not necessarily a given for teachers of any nationality. Many English teachers in Germany freelance at two or three different businesses or schools to make ends meet. Most are TESOL-trained and often have experience as well. Germany definitely qualifies as a competitive employment market for English teachers. Despite the country's size and the number of foreigners teaching English there you won't see a lot of jobs posted on ESL web sites. Knocking on doors, doing demo lessons and starting off with limited hours are all realities an aspiring English teacher should expect. Salaries can appear attractive on paper but don't expect to get rich in Germany. Both taxes and the cost of living are high. Take the time to network and make contacts to get the inside scoop on the teaching situation in your target area of Germany. As always, do your research!
