Czech Primer

The Czech teaching market boomed during the 1990s as travelling teachers flocked to Prague to experience one of Europe's most amazing and, at the time, cheapest cities. Today Prague and the rest of the Czech Republic remains a very attractive TEFL destination but the opportunity is not what it was ten years ago.

Being a native-speaker is, in most cases, no longer enough. Many schools request and even require TESOL certificates and/or previous experience. The employment market is more competitive in Prague where teacher training programs abound. Salaries start at about 8,000 Crowns and go up from there. Jobs in Prague pay more than those elsewhere but the cost of living there is predictably higher. The hiring season is year-round with most jobs going to teachers who can apply in person.
