China PrimerOnly a decade ago China was barely on the TEFL road map. Then along came the Hong Kong handover, the Beijing Olympics and the WTO and suddenly China needed English and needed it now! A sleeping dragon no more, China's economy is booming and with it opportunities for English teachers. If it isn't already, China is well on its way to becoming the number one employer of EFL teachers in the world.Jobs are easy to find in China. Good jobs - well, that's another story. China's sudden emergence as an importer of English teachers has resulted in a employment reality that can range from uninformed to unscrupulous. Research is key! Make sure you understand local market situations and contractual conditions before taking a position. While 23 hours a week of classroom time may sound great compared to Korea or Japan, it's more than the average in China. Salaries start at 3000RMB and go up from there - with good reason! The cost of living in China can vary greatly from the country to the city. So can the potential to teach privately and generate additional income. Teaching situations and resources can vary greatly as well. Simply stated, some schools know what they are doing, some don't. With airfare often provided upfront or reimbursed and apartments almost always provided and paid for, China can be a great place for new teachers. The country is rich in its past and its potential.
